Neurosis

Neurosis – an old term for a range of psychiatric disorders in which there was no loss of contact with reality ( unlike psychosis).

Disorders  classed as neurotic included mild forms of depression, anxiety, hypochondriasis and dissociative disorders.

ANXIETY

An unpleasant emotional state that may range from mild unease to intense fear.

It is a normal response to stressful situations and prepares the mind and body to respond effectively. When it occurs without a reason, however, that is a symptom of anxiety disorder or a depression.

Anxiety Symptoms

A variety of physical symptoms are associated with anxiety. The most common include palpitation, chest pains, a feeling of tightness in the chest, and tendency to overbreathe. Muscles tensions leads to  headaches and back pains.

Gastrointestinal symptoms of anxiety include dry mouth, bloating, diarrhoea, nausea. Other symptoms include light-headedness, sweating, pallor, blushing and frequent need to urinate or defecate.

People with anxiety may have constant feeling that something bad is going to happen. Fear of losing control is also very common. That sate often leads to increasing dependence on others, irritability, a sense of fatigue, and frustration.

Anxiety disorders are very common in young adults when they suffer from persistent tension and apprehension that has no specific cause. There few types of anxiety disorders.

Panic disorder – characterized by sudden and recurrent attacks of extreme, unreasonable fear and anxiety.

This is the most common serious psychiatric illness. It is the fourth in the ten leading causes of diseases worldwide. Depression is common in people over 50 and occurs more common in women.

Depression is associated with feelings of sadness, hopelessness and a loss of interest in life. It is combined with a sense of reduced emotional well-being. Most people experience these feelings from time  to time, usually as a normal response to an upsetting event (for instance death of a relative).

Depression that occurs without any apparent cause , deepens and persists may occur as part of a variety of psychiatric illnesses.

Symptoms of depression

Symptoms depends on the severity of the condition. In a person suffering from mild depression, the main symptoms would be an anxiety and variable of mood.

The person with a mild depression may have fits of crying that occur for no reason. Severe depression may lead to loss of appetite, difficulty in sleeping, tiredness, loss of interest in social activities and impaired concentration.

People who are severely depressed may have thoughts of committing suicide and feelings of worthlessness.

Causes of depression

Often , there is no single obvious cause and a combination of factors may be involved.

Depression may be triggered by physical illness (viral infection), by hormonal disorders (hypothyroidism) or by  the hormonal changes that occur following childbirth (postnatal depression).

Certain drugs such as oral contraceptives may contribute to the condition. Inheritance may play a role as well. Some people become depressed during winter (seasonal affective disorder syndrome).

There are also social and psychological factors that may play a part. Depression may also be related to the number of disturbing changes or events in a person’s life.
