These are abnormalities in menstrual bleeding. Menstrual disorders may indicate a problem in the pelvic area, such as:
- Fibroids - a slow-growing and noncancerous tumour that develops in the wall of the uterus.
- Endometriosis – a condition in which fragments of the endometrium (the lining of the inside of the uterus) are found in other parts of the body, usually in the pelvic cavity
- Pelvic Inflammatory disease – inflammation of the internal female reproductive organs. PID is usually due to an infection.
……. , but the cause is often unknown. Women whose general health and resistance are good are less likely to have menstrual problems.
SYMPTOMS

MOST COMMON MENSTRUAL DISORDERS
Amenorrhea: Absence or suppression of menstruation. Primary amenorrhea is defined as failure to start menstruating by the age of 16. Secondary it is the temporary or permanent cessation of periods in a woman who has menstruated regularly in the past.
Periods tend to stop in athletes and in women who drop below 20% body fat.
Dysmenorrhea: Painful or difficult menstruation is the most common menstrual disorder. Cramp-like pain or discomfort is felt in the lower abdomen, sometimes accompanied by a dull ache in the lower back. Some women also have nausea and vomiting. Primary it is common to teenage girls – usually does not occur until several years after menstruation begins and often diminishes after the age of 25. Secondary dysmenorrheal is due to an underlying disorder such as Endometriosis or Pelvic Inflammatory disease. May start 2-3 days before onset. It is a more constant pain, but includes sharp cramps, and continues throughout the period.
Polymenorrhoea: overly frequent menstruation.
Menorrhagia: Bleeding between periods or excessive loss of blood during menstruation. Menorrhagia may be caused by imbalance of estrogen hormones and progesterone hormones, which control menstruation. The imbalance leads to an excessive build up of endometrium.
Oligomenorrhea: Infrequent or scanty menstruation.
An irregular cycle often indicates the general state of a woman’s health, and is usually the result of nutritional deficiencies or autointoxication caused by constipation, an organic malfunction, drugs, vitamin or mineral deficiency, and/or chemicals.
