Chronic fatigue

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) – long-term tiredness that affects everyday life. It does not go away with sleep or rest. Also known as myalgic encephalo-myelitis, or ME, a condition that causes extreme fatigue over a prolonged period, often several years.  Myalgia means muscle pain and encephalomyelitis means inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Both terms are commonly used. It is most common in women aged between 25 and 45.

CAUSES

The causes is unclear. In some cases, it develops after a viral infection or stressful event such as bereavement. In other cases, there is no preceding illness or event.

Most common causes of CFS or ME:

1. Poor nutrition

2. Deficiency of vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes
3. Impurity of the body (toxemia)
4. Stimulants (alcohol, cigarettes, coffee, drugs)
5. Excess of sweets eaten
6. Candida Albicans – mycosis
7. Physical and mental fatigue

8. Sleep disorders, sleep apnoea, snoring
9. Environmental pollution, electromagnetic smog
10. Drug abuse, slimming and diets.
11. Stress at work and home

SYMPTOMS

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) affects many thousands of people of all types and ages. The main symptom is persistent, overwhelming tiredness. Other symptoms vary, but commonly include impairment of short- term memory or concentration, visual and balance disturbance, gastric disturbances, sore throat, tender lymph nodes , muscle and joint pain, muscle fatigue, unrefreshing sleep or nausea, and chronic headaches. The syndrome is often associated with depression or anxiety.

An important thing to note is that all symptoms are generally made a lot worse by physical or mental exertion of any kind. It is common for the severity of the illness to wax and wane from day to day as well as over longer periods of weeks and months. Patients frequently experience periods of remission and relapse.

DIAGNOSIS

There is no specific diagnostic test for chronic fatigue syndrome and investigations of the condition are usually aimed at excluding other possible causes of the symptoms, such as anaemia. A physical examination, blood tests, and a psychological assessment may be carried out. If no cause for the condition can be found , diagnosis is made from the symptoms.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a long term disorder, but may clear up after several years.

PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME (PMS)

Symptoms of PMS always appears in the same phase of the cycle, usually 7-10 days before the start of bleeding. There are over 150 symptoms linked to PMS, of which the most common include abdominal bloating, anxiety, acne, backache, breast swelling and tenderness, swollen feet, depression, cramps, food cravings, fainting spells, headaches, fatigue, joint pain, insomnia, nervousness, impatience, drastic mood swings, angry outbursts.

Other symptoms include sluggishness, lethargy, delusions, indecisiveness, dizziness, constipation, hemorrhoids, skin eruptions, and migraines.

CAUSES

PMS affects many women during the one to two weeks prior to the onset of menstruation. It affects one-third to one-half of all women between the ages of 20 and 50. Almost 75% have the problem at one time or another, however about 5%  the condition may be so severe that work and social relationship are seriously disrupted – enough to interfere with their daily life.

Hormonal imbalance is part of the PMS problem.

The liver regulates hormonal balance, by selectively filtering out of the blood and excreting unwanted excess hormones. One of these is estradiol. When not eliminated, it can build up in the body.

Part of the hormonal imbalance problem is that there is too much estrogen in the body and not enough progesterone. This affects the circulation and impedes oxygen and nutrient flow to the brain and female organs.

Food that cause PMS:

-  Eating chocolate, caffeine, sugar, and excess sodium are additional causative factors. Women who regularly consume caffeine are four times more likely to have severe PMS.

- Red meat and dairy products help produce a hormonal imbalance—exactly the kind in PMS, excessive estrogen and inadequate progesterone.

- Food allergies are another related factor. Search out the offending foods and stop eating them

- It is important that you not eat foods which contain hormones! Many have been added to dairy products (cows and chickens) and meat.

TREATMENT as a prevention to PMS

• Constipation is a primary reason why the liver cannot get rid of excess estradiol. Eat natural foods with sufficient bulk. Avoid processed and junk foods. For a better liver activity – Liver Aid

• An inadequate supply of B complex vitamins is another factor causing PMS. B vitamins and magnesium help the liver excrete unwanted estrogen.  Stress Management is highly recommended.

• Obtain a full supply of vitamin/mineral supplements – Vital Woman and Full Spectrum

• Adequate calcium intake during the monthly cycle is very important. Blood calcium drops 10 days before menstruation. A lack of it causes headaches, tension, nervousness, depression, insomnia.  Try Strong Bones.

• Regular outdoor exercise is important. Walk at least half a mile a day. This increases oxygen intake, which in turn aids in nutrient absorption and elimination of toxins.

Selenium is an antioxidant and helps prevent menstrual cramps.

• Herbs helpful in treating PMS including Gingko Biloba – Protect 4 Life . They help balance the hormones.

Vitamin E has been found useful in the treatment of PMS, with most improvement – benign breast disease. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and helps prevent inflammatory reactions to dietary fats
